Charming Viktoria Cmilite is the only player of the first round who managed to defeat a representative of the Chinese chess school - Lufei Ruan. Her next opponent was Alexandra Kosteniuk from Russia, who also played with her at the previous World Championship in Elista.

Today March 18 there started the 4th round of the Women’s World Chess Championship, on the other hand the Children Chess Tournament, being held at the same time, has finished.
The following 4 pairs of challengers started their fight for the champion’s crown: Alisa Galliamova (Russia) – Nino Khurtsidze (Georgia), Svetlana Matveeva (Russia) – Marie Sebag (France), Ekaterina Kovalevskaya (Russia) – Xu Yuhua (China) and Maya Chibrdanidze (Georgia) – Viktoria Cmilyte (Lithuania). Meanwhile, when the participants of the championship have started the most serious part of the tournament, their younger colleagues from Yekaterinburg have already finished it. The Children Chess tournament of Sverdlovsk region is over. This contest was dedicated to the World Championship, which is being held on the Ural land for the first time.

The third round of the Women’s World Chess Championship 2006 has finished. As it was reported earlier Svetlana Matveeva was the first to reach the next round. Viktoria Cmilyte (Lithuania) , the representative of China Xu Yuhua and Nino Khurtsidze from Georgia followed her. After tie-breaks we learnt the names of other 1/4 finalists. They are Ekaterina Kovalevskaya and Alisa Galliamova from Russia, Marie Sebag (France) and a chess legend from Georgia Maya Chiburdanidze.

As it was reported, the last day of the 3rd round was extremely intense. That’s why all the participants looked forward to having a rest. The organizers did their best preparing highly topical and impressive program.
Its main constituent part was an excursion. The trip about the most famous places of Yekaterinburg and region, the old city’s stories and legends, valuable historical information – everything to entertain our guests. The first object of excursion was an orthodox museum the Temple on Blood, a unique architectural and historical building. The temple, erected on the place where the family of the last Russian emperor was executed, is a symbolic sightseeing of Yekaterinburg. Then the excursion moved to the church complex “Ganina Yama” – the place where the Russian emperor’s family was buried and which is also an inseparable part of the city’s history.

16.03.2006 | The third round of the Women’s World Chess Championship

The third round of the Women’s World Chess Championship, which started on March 10 2006 in the exhibition hall of Atrium Palace Hotel, finishes today.
Out of 63 competing players just 16 are left. Among the remaining contestants the representatives of Russian Chess school have a quantitative advantage: Alexandra Kosteniuk, Tatiana Kosintseva, Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, Alisa Galliamova and Svetlana Matveeva. The most serious opponents to them are four representatives of China: among them a new discovery of the championship – 12-year old Hou Yifan. Two players from Georgia, including legendary Maya Chiburdanidze, and 5 challengers from India, Lithuania, Holland, Poland and France , keep fighting as well.

16.03.2006 | Maria Kursova: Turgenev’s ladies play… football too.

The first days of the championship, as it was expected, were very surprising. One of the most important wins for chess fans of Yekaterinburg was that of Maria Kursova, a young but very talented player who beat one of the strongest women chess players in the world from China Zhao Xue. But the next game against Ekaterina Kovalevskaya was disastrous for her. After the game Maria agreed to take part in our press-conference.
-Our congratulations on winning the first match. Please tell us about your opponents, your impressions…
MK: Thank you very much. In the second game of the first match I performed quite well. The opening wasn’t brilliant , but my opponent’s play also left much to be desired . That’s why I managed to win. In the second round I met with a stronger and more famous player Katya Kovalevskaya. Unfortunately I lost today.

Xu Yuhua, the representative of China is the only two time winner of the Women World Chess Cup, and as you know she brilliantly performed at the “North Urals Cup” last year.
- What is your impression of Yekaterinburg? What can you say about the Championship’s organization and your accommodation?
- I really like your city. We were very well received at the airport; as for the hotel, food, playing hall, organization – everything is the best. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to walk about the city, but I’ve already visited the church nearby.

The next guest of press-centre is a former European women champion, a charming lady,and a shrewd and penetrating person Almira Skripchenko.
- How do you estimate your performance at the championship?
AS: To tell the truth, I am not in my best form so I didn’t hope to perform well. Today after losing the first game I wasn’t satisfied with a draw. And it determined the game. I wish I had won back.
