14.03.2006   FAVOURITES FAILURE.

One of the most sensational rounds of the Women’s World Chess Championship has finished. It turned out tragic for Championship’s favorites. The World Women’s Champion Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria), rating–favorite Humpy Koneru (India), the 3rd number of starting list Pia Cramling(Sweden) lost to Iweta Radziewicz(Poland), Marie Sebag (France), Peng Zhaoquin from Netherlands accordingly. But if Antoaneta and Humpy are left after tie-breaks, an experienced Pia – after the normal games.

13.03.2006   Alexandra Kosteniuk: the beginning worthy of the champion

At the end of the first round there was a press-conference of one of the rating – favorites of the Championship – GM Alexandra Kosteniuk. The fact that before the tournament Sasha was quite reserved regarding mass media, explaining it by her desire to concentrate on the forthcoming event, caused a lot of questions.

12.03.2006   World Championship: the first press-conference

On March, 11 the first press-conference dedicated to the beginning of the Women’s World Chess Championship 2006 took place. Its participants were FIDE president Kirsan Ilumzhinov and the governor of Sverdlovsk region Eduard Rossel. The honorary right to the welcoming speech was given to the dearest guest of the Ural land. Kirsan Nickolayevich expressed his gratitude to the government of the region, first of all, for the enthusiasm to hold the championship in Yekaterinburg and afterwards for helping in its organization. FIDE president also thanked the governor Eduard Rossel for his personal patronage of the championship in Yekaterinburg and gave the example of successful joint experience in organizing the super tournament “The Northern Urals Cup” during the last three years.

64 top chess players arrived in Ekaterinburg to compare their strength in open and fair rivalry. 64 black and white squares of chess board will turn the capital of the Urals into the capital of world chess. Owing to this tournament, Ural citizens will get the chance to meet legendary chess players among which there will be current women's world chess champion Stefanova Antoaneta, five times women's world chess champion Chiburdanidze Maya, world vice-champions Kovalevskaya Ekaterina and Galliamova Alisa, girls world, Europe and Russia chess champions.
