20.03.2006   Marie Sebag: Not afraid of strong opponents!

-How do you like Yekaterinburg, did you manage to walk about the city? What do you think of the Championship’s organization?
MS: I really like Yekaterinburg and the way I am received here. By the way, I have a friend Karina living in Yekaterinburg. We got acquainted at one of the chess tournaments then emailed and finally I managed to visit her. I’d like to thank Karina and her parents for their hospitality. I am quite satisfied with the Championship’s organization.

-Please share your impressions on your opponents.
MS: My opponents were very strong: in round 1 I met a very experienced Russian player Elena Zaiatz, in the 2nd – a top seated player Humpy Koneru and in round 3 I played against Chinese player Qin Janying.

-Please tell us some words about yourself. When did you take up chess, who helps you and what are your most prominent achievements?
MS: I have 2 coaches: Amir Bagery and Andrey Shchekachev. I am a three-time European Girls’ U-12, U-14 and U-16 Champion.

-When did you take up chess? Who helped you?
MS: I started playing chess at 6 by my mother’s assistance. I live and train in Paris, play for “Evry” club. I’ve already got a Bachelor’s degree but I’m going to keep my studying in September.

-It’s a well known fact that many European players study Russian for it’s very widespread in the chess world. Are you going to follow Elizabeth Paehts’ example and study Russian?
MS: Yes, I know that it’s very important to know Russian in the chess world. I will probably try to study it. Maybe my friend Karina will help me.

-What do you think of Almira Skripchenko? She is a many –time Women National Champion…
MS: She is a good opponent and I think she is stronger. I’d like to play as good as Almira.

-Are you going to take part in the Olympiad?
MS: Unfortunately, I am not on the participants’ list. Before the previous European Championship I had been plunged into studying that’s why I failed to perform well. I just wasn’t prepared for it.

-Is it likely that the French Chess Federation change the decision after your performance at this Championship?
MS: I don’t think so. Everything has already been confirmed.

-How can you estimate your results at this Championship?
MS: I am glad that I have managed to outplay such strong opponents. My achievement at the World Championship is the best in the history of Women French Chess. I am happy.

-Are you in Russia for the first time?
MS: No, two years ago I took part in Aeroflot Open Tournament and in the World Championship in Elista as well.

-How often do you use computer preparing for the games?
MS: Computer is certainly necessary in chess. As for me I use chess software “Fritz 9”. But I don’t encourage computers in games. It won’t be that interesting because the ideas and moves will become more apparent.

-What is your hobby but for chess?
MS: I like to read, to listen to French music.

-What are your future plans?
MS: I will take part in several Opens and the European Women’s Chess Championship. I am only 19 and hope to reach many goals in my life.
